Update Roadmap
The last time I did an announcement like this was almost three years ago, and that didn’t end up very well (released 1.4.3 almost 3 years after saying it would release in early 2023), but I think a roadmap will help clarify where future updates will be heading.
1.4.3p: Upcoming patch I am happy with how 1.4.3 turned out, but there are a few weird things that I hope to maybe fix in the upcoming patch update. You can think of 1.4.3p more like 1.4.3½, and there may even be a few texture changes to fix some discrepancies around the map. Here’s the summary of issues that will likely be fixed in 1.4.3p:
- When endings are triggered, the game quits almost immediately after being teleported to the ending boxes with images corresponding to the ending. This fix may be rolled out between 1.4.3p and 1.4.4, but I hope to fix as many endings with this issue as possible.
- When teleporting to endings, the player’s camera is rotated in the wrong direction. This issue, along with the above, are a bit annoying to fix but I have figured out how to actually rotate the camera (via scripts, after finding a “workaround” thanks to the spaghetti code made by me from three years ago). Overall, I hope to fix most if not all of the endings that are affected by this issue.
The issues mentioned above are likely to be fixed in 1.4.3p, but the updates are subject to change.
1.4.4: Next (major) Release
1.4.4, like I said in the previous devlog (1.4.3 update) will mostly add content, including new characters, models, and textures, and continue the texture changes from the previous update. I plan on optimizing the geometry of the playing scene (level) and fixing stretching and overall weird textures, but that may come a bit sooner in 1.4.3p. Some notable improvements and changes will likely be (subject to change of course!!!)
- More characters- At least two new characters are planned to be added
- Less barren map- Most of the landmarks around NormalTown (the map) are centered around the road, and I hope to add more houses and roads (possibly cars even!) in this update and further updates (which I will mention later)
- Improved scenery- The houses for Brother and Quinn honestly kind suck. I am hoping that I will either use Blender or the built-in modeling tools in Unity to redesign the houses (with redesigned textures of course!)
- More endings- This is very uncertain at the moment. Currently I am hoping to work on existing endings and overall make them less buggy and possibly a bit more challenging, but I can’t make any promises yet, at least for 1.4.4.
1.4.5: Possible major revamp
1.4.5 will hopefully attempt to fix most of the glaring issues in Computer Quest, along with adding new endings and maybe a full completion of the backrooms (no promises, we know how that went last time. I really want to make Computer Quest an actual game that people can play and have fun in, and I hope that 1.4.5, and future updates (likely 1.4.6 and 1.4.7) will add content and overall make the game actual fun. Here’s some changes that may be included:
- Art Style consistency- I don’t want to make Computer Quest super high quality or spend like 500 hours working on textures in Photoshop, but at the same time I also want the game to not look like I spent two seconds opening Microsoft Paint and just scribbled a texture (unless that’s what’s wanted?), and I want to make sure that the art style stays consistent throughout the game. TLDR: I want to try and make the art style a bit more consistent.
- UI Revamp- Honestly the UI right now sucks. Currently the pause menu doesn’t want to pause the first time you press escape for some reason, so unless it has something to do with the script, it is yet another reason for why I should revamp the UI. Currently, the game (at least I think) uses the uGUI (Unity UI) system. The system is pretty easy to use honestly, but considering the Unity manual calls it “legacy” makes me think it’s about time to update the UI. Apparently the new system, UI Toolkit, has existed for like five years and I just didn’t know about it, or was too lazy to figure out how to learn about XML and stuff. Expect the UI revamp to take a while.
This roadmap, once again, is not the definitive plan I will use to develop the future versions, but expect the changes outlined in this to arrive at some point.
